“I would especially associate myself with the complimentary remarks made about the gentleman from Indiana (Mr. Hill), my colleague and friend to the south, for his great leadership on this legislation. I would also like to thank Senators Bayh and Lugar for introducing the bill in the Senate. As a boy growing up in Columbus, Indiana, when I was the age of the little boy sitting on my office floor right now, my Congressman was Lee Hamilton; and that famous crew cut, that confident stride of a basketball player, was a frequent image on the streets of Columbus, Indiana. I had the honor of following his career and unsuccessfully applying for a job in his office at one point in my early career. For 34 years, I watched as he served both my hometown and all of Indiana with humility and distinction. Upon his retirement from the House of Representatives in 1998, Congressman Hamilton left a blueprint in public service here in the halls of the Capitol.”
