“Mr. Speaker, we all realized, many on both sides of the aisle last year, that it was simply morally wrong to tax married couples more than unmarried couples living together in America. Mr. Speaker, we realized it was morally wrong to tax small business owners and family farmers over 50 percent of everything they had earned and kept after paying taxes all of their lives, just because of their deaths. And last year Congress repealed, with much support on the Democrat side of the aisle, the marriage penalty and repealed estate taxes. But because of an arcane rule in the Senate, these taxes will be thrust back into the pockets of American taxpayers in the year 2011. Just as it was morally wrong to have these taxes on the books, I offer to you it is morally wrong, Mr. Speaker, to bait and switch the American people. So many of my constituents have thanked me on the street for ending death taxes, thanked me for ending the onerous marriage penalty, and I have to stop them and say, well, almost.”
