I urge my colleagues to support the Senate amendment to H.R. 34, the 21st Century Cures Act. Over our country's history, American innovators have proven among the best in the world, especially in the field of drug and device research. 21st Century Cures streamlines the process for American innovators to see their research and development reach patients faster than ever, while maintaining a safe and effective review process. It also invests in the areas we need it the most, to advance research and testing on the most complex and devastating diseases in our country. It also gives young scientists the support they need to bring new ideas to the scientific community. The mental health and opioid abuse provisions in this legislation are also critical. As a physician who has relied on medical innovation to care for patients, working to pass the 21st Century Cures Act and ensuring America remains on the forefront of cutting edge research has been one of the highlights of my time in Congress. I thank Chairman Upton and Representative DeGette for their leadership and commitment to this legislation.
