First of all, all we are doing is asking for the extension of existing law. We are not increasing numbers; we are not changing anything like that. Both the State Department and INS have indicated informally they have no objection to this extension of the law. I wish there were no problem with anti-Semitism in Eastern Europe. The reality is there is a problem. There is also a problem, a less severe problem, but no less severe for some of the people involved, for some Evangelical Christians. The Eastern part of Europe is not accustomed to the kind of religious diversity that is part of our country and part of the culture of so many countries. What adds a fear factor is Vladimir Zhirinovsky's emergence. My hope is that he will be like this fellow who ran against Lech Walesa who, all of a sudden was out there for a few weeks and months and then he just kind of disappeared from the scene. Frankly, I hope Zhirinovsky will be a similar phenomenon, that people will recognize that he is just bad medicine for Russia, for everybody. You cannot have that kind of poison out there without harming everyone. It seems to me what our colleague from New Jersey--and I am pleased to join him in sponsoring this--what we are asking for is just to keep that door open because there may be problems arising. There are some problems now. Those problems could get more serious.
