By the time I am done speaking, 11 people will have died from gun violence in our country. By the end of the day, it will be 120. If we continue down this trajectory, more than 43,000 people will die from gun violence this year. This legislative body needs to take more action beyond thoughts and prayers. I introduced the Wear Orange Resolution this National Gun Violence Awareness Month in honor of Hadiya Pendleton. She would have turned 27 years old this month, but her life was cut short at 15 when she was shot and killed. Every time I rise to urge Congress to pass commonsense gun safety laws, I remember Hadiya who should have been safe at a park. Two years ago, we passed the first Federal gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. We cannot wait another 30 years. It has only been a minute and 11 more people have died from gun violence. ____________________
