“H.R. 2737 directs the Secretary of the Interior to give a specific parcel of land to the State of Illinois to be used as a historic and interpretive center for the Lewis and Clark trail, the 39-acre parcel of land located at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers about 20 miles northeast of St. Louis. This area played a significant role in the story of Lewis and Clark, as it is the area where the explorers camped before beginning their journey. In addition, many of the members of this historic corps were recruited from the surrounding area. As the 200th anniversary of the expedition approaches, a variety of activities commemorating this amazing achievement will take place across the country, and it is certainly fitting that Lewis and Clark's launching point will host a new historic and interpretive center. Importantly, the legislation makes the conveyance conditional on the completion of a survey and requires that, should the State ever discontinue use of the site for historic and interpretive purposes, the land must be returned to the Federal Government.”
