I take the floor today in the course of a special order to try to draw some attention to issues which affect the people I represent, the people of Guam. Mr. Speaker, Guam is a small island about 9,000 miles from here. It has 150,000 proud U.S. citizens and offers the United States a transit point through which military power is projected into that part of the world. It is a cornerstone of America's projection of its military strength in Asia and the Pacific. Guam has a $10 billion military infrastructure. Our island is primarily influenced by Asian economic trends, and we have a fair-sized economy for a population of 150,000. We have a $3 billion economy that is fueled primarily by tourism. We had over 1.2 million tourists last year, we anticipate, and we certainly hope that we will get more.
