Simply put, my amendment authorizes funding for the Federal share of a Federal-State-local partnership to build a maritime safety station along Chicago's lakefront. Though my congressional district does not encompass any of the Chicago lakefront, I, like most Illinoisans, am concerned about the area's safety needs. Many of my constituents sail on Lake Michigan, and the U.S. Coast Guard's marine safety office is located in Burr Ridge, Illinois, in the district I represent. From the Burr Ridge location, the servicemen and women of the U.S. Coast Guard are responsible for commercial vessel safety, marine environmental response, port safety and security, and waterways management for the Illinois River and its tributaries, the Des Plaines River, the Chicago River and portions of Lake Michigan. Despite this extensive mission, the U.S. Coast Guard has no presence or base of operation in Chicago along the lakefront.
