“Mr. Speaker, as we have touched upon this afternoon, James Madison was a man who strongly embodied and advanced the principles that our government represents: economic freedom, limited government, the rule of law, individual liberty, and personal responsibility. James Madison also was a man who believed in the greatness of the United States and hoped to see it always remain as a whole. In a note that was opened after his death in 1836, Madison wrote that, I quote, ``the advice nearest to my heart and deepest in my convictions is that the union of the States be cherished and perpetuated.'' At a time when we face unprecedented challenges to our electoral challenge, James Madison's words are something we should all heed.
