“I rise in opposition once again to the Markey amendment. This amendment would zero out an appropriation of $20 million for a very important ongoing environmental nuclear waste reduction research program which is being conducted by the Department of Energy in Illinois and Idaho. In addition, this amendment would, in the words of the Department of Energy, also, if passed, zero out an additional $25 million, and as a result, and I quote the Department of Energy, ``end all activities by the Department of Energy to place the EBR II nuclear reactor in a radiologically and industrially safe condition.'' In other words, it would end the shutdown of the EBR reactor, something which the gentleman from Massachusetts [Mr. Markey] and his allies have worked so hard to achieve 4 years ago, to kill that nuclear reactor. I shall, however, refer primarily to the effect that this amendment would have in ending a very valuable and ongoing research program, the electrometallurgical treatment of DOE spent fuel.”
