I would urge my colleagues to vote against the Myers amendment. Let me give two reasons. We first should not be dealing with this kind of last-minute attempt to come up with emergency relief while the people of southern California and those living in the Midwest are waiting for vital disaster services. That is unfair to the victims who want to get their lives back in order, who want to get back in their homes, who want to see some normalcy in their lives, to be really victimized by our efforts here on the floor of the House of Representatives. The Speaker has appointed a bipartisan disaster task force to look to funding these disasters in a sensible, long-term fashion, not in the heat of the moment. Cobbling together various cuts in an attempt to try and find some way to deal with each disaster as it occurs is poor policy. That is the thoughtful and sensible way to deal with disasters. This is not.
