“Mr. President, I rise to speak about an issue that is timely and controversial; it is the issue of immigration. There has been a heated debate for over a year about the immigration law passed by the State of Arizona. This debate highlighted the need for Congress to fix our broken immigration system. Here is how the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police put it: We strongly urge the U.S. Congress to immediately initiate the necessary steps to begin the process of comprehensively addressing the immigration issue to provide solutions that are fair, logical and equitable. I agree with the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police. Congress has an obligation to the American people to fix our broken immigration system. This broken system harms our national security, it hurts our workers, and it falls short of the most basic standards of justice. First, we must secure our borders, strengthen enforcement of our immigration laws, and address the situation of approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants who live and work in our country. Unfortunately, the reality is that Congress is not likely to consider comprehensive immigration reform this year.
