I am a supporter of the notion of reimportation of prescription drugs. As a matter of fact, I am a proud cosponsor of H.R. 847 introduced by the gentleman from Vermont (Mr. Sanders), my good friend. Some people might ask me why do I support the concept of reimportation of prescription drugs, and I generally say to them it is no real big deal if they understand as I do, but I do it for a lot of reasons. One, the increasing use of prescription drugs has revolutionized health care. As a result, spending on prescription drugs has increased at a rate of 12 to 13 percent a year for the past decade and will continue to increase in cost at that rate for the foreseeable future. Prescription drugs are the fastest-growing portion of State health care budgets, and many States are facing serious budget crises relative to being able to come up with enough money to actually operate.
