More from Abraham Lincoln
Say to the gentlemen I will meet them personally at Fortress Monroe as soon as I can get there.
It is due to this officer to state that he was passed over in consequence of physical disability, this disability having occurred in the discharge of his duties; and prior to his misfortune he bore the reputation of an efficient and correct officer, and subsequently has evinced a willingness to perform whatever duties were assigned him.
To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan, is our duty.
I am, sir, very respectfully, your obedient servant, ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
