“Memorial Day is a very special day for me and my family, as I am sure it is for millions of other families across our great nation. Prior to my years in public office, I proudly served my country in the United States Army. During my twenty years as a soldier, I served a number of overseas tours, including two tours in Vietnam. The years I spent wearing the uniform of my country will always be special to me, and the brave Americans I knew as a result of my service will always have a special place in my heart. I would like to take this opportunity today to reflect upon the sacrifices our brave servicemen and women have made in the past and are making today as they honorably serve overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. I know what it is like to serve in a hostile environment far away from the comforts of home, separated from your loved ones. I also know the joy they will feel when they return home to their families. However, war does not promise that everyone who serves will return home.”
