I rise today specifically to express my support for the passage of H.R. 4284, a bill, as I think all of us know, to allow India to establish a memorial to honor Mahatma Gandhi here in Washington, D.C. This memorial is a positive reminder of the growing relationship between the world's oldest democracy and the world's largest democracy. The memorial is a gift to the people of the United States from the people of India in celebration of India's 50 years of freedom. It will symbolize not only the strong friendship between the U.S. and India but also the impact that Gandhi had in the United States and in particular on the civil rights movement.
