On the recordSeptember 6, 1995
I do think there have been a number of improvements made in the bill in the Chamber, most notably the Missile Defense Act, which I anticipate will be approved in a few minutes on a rollcall vote. There are a number of other challenges we have in conference if this bill is going to become law, and I will speak to that at passage of the authorization bill because I think it is enormously important that we work together in a cooperative way with the administration to make every effort to see that this bill will be one the President will be willing to sign. There are a number of items that are in the bill now which will not meet that definition according to what I have been reliably informed. So I will be working with my colleagues to both identify the administration objections and to see if those can be worked on as we go forward. I also think the committee chairman and all those who worked in good faith in the Chamber have a real stake in trying to make sure we get a bill that can become law this year, and I know we will work together in that regard.
