Mr. Speaker, it is very important for this body and the country to realize that the vast majority of workers in this country working for the minimum wage are women, and it is these hard-working women who are supporting their families that we need to celebrate today because they are finally going to get 90 cents an hour more, not a whole lot, but it is $36 week, $1,800 a year, something which they should have been getting many, many months ago. They are finally getting it. We have been preached at about the importance of work, so today finally they are getting a pay raise to help support their families. Under welfare we are forcing single mothers to go to work. With this minimum wage they will have a chance to lift their families out of poverty. Not a single person in this body ought to regret the fact of minimum wage going up today.
