“last year, during the consideration of the fiscal year 1996 defense appropriations measure, the Congress approved the Center for Photonics Research at Boston University. I am pleased to share with my colleague an interim report that was just submitted by the president of Boston University, advising us of the progress being made in this technology. Boston University has invested over $60 million of its own funding to create and establish the Center, and we are committed to its long-term mission and success. Photonics technology will, as you have observed, be one of the keys to our nation's ability to defend itself from external threats; it will also become a driving force in all sectors of our economy. It is truly the technology of the future.”
