“Coral reefs are some of the most important ecosystems in the United States, providing environmental and economic benefits to our communities. Coral reefs provide almost $2 billion in local income and over 70,000 jobs for neighboring communities. Coral reefs provide ecosystem services valued at over $8 billion. These vital natural resources, however, are facing a multitude of threats, the impacts of which are little understood. NOAA works in partnership with external partners across the United States to provide the opportunity for scientists from academic institutions to work in collaboration with NOAA and other partners to address a wide variety of threats. Now, these partnerships allow for better understanding of local impacts, leading to local management decisions that account for unique socioeconomic and cultural priorities. I do appreciate the committee's support for $24 million in funding for coral reef programs in NOAA, and I ask that you work with the Senate to maintain funding for NOAA's important coral reef programs, including coral research.
