I have heard these arguments on the floor, and let me say to my colleagues in the room, that is absolutely not a waste of time. When my fellow Nevadans elected me to come to Congress, they entrusted me with a great responsibility of keeping their families safe, their economy strong, and their taxes low; and by supporting this bill, by passing the Permanent Marriage Penalty Relief Act, we are going to fulfill those obligations. In making the elimination of the marriage penalty tax permanent, we will provide married couples across the Nation peace of mind to plan for their financial security for years to come. After all, why would we want our hardworking families to begin receiving additional financial security through this important tax relief only to turn around and strip them, as the Democrats would like to do, 10 years from the date and add to their tax burden.
