“this morning, when Nevadans head off to work, they are going to have a little extra spring in their step and little lighter burden on their shoulders, because this fine morning, not only is the sun starting to peak through the clouds, but working men and women in Nevada are finally going to work for themselves, their families, their futures, and not the government. That is right, Mr. Speaker, today, May 13th, is Tax Freedom Day in Nevada. During 1998, so far Nevadans have worked 91 days, almost 3 months, to pay their Federal taxes, and an additional 41 days to pay their State and local taxes. The fact that these hard working men and women in this country have to spend nearly one-half of the year working to pay the government ought to concern, if not outrage, all of us in this room. Surely, not even the most liberal of my colleagues on the other aisle can defend this tax level. I call on my colleagues to join me in instituting common sense tax relief in this country. Let us begin by eliminating the marriage tax and the death tax as well. Let us start moving the process back, not forward.”
