“every so often this House gets the chance to do the right thing. Today Mr. Hastert files discharge petition No. 18 on the Older Americans Freedom To Work Act--legislation to repeal an unfair, outdated, and down right discriminatory provision of the Social Security Act known as the earnings test which singles out hard working seniors to pay higher taxes. It is just not the 1930's any more when this law was passed and it is time for Government to get this dinosaur off the books. Older Americans are able and eager to work and many need to--why should Government be discouraging them? You would think with 221 Members of this House from both parties on board to repeal this extra tax on seniors, that we would be able to make it happen. But up until now, the House Democrat leadership has blocked the way. Let us do the right thing--sign the discharge petition for H.R. 300. Let us give the seniors a little good news.”
