Every morning 180,000 of our fellow citizens go to work with one main thing on their mind, to prepare, to prevent and to respond to a potential terrorist attack in the United States. These people work for one of the 22 agencies that have been brought together under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security. Homeland security has new meaning since September 11. For this reason, I was proud to support the President's request for the creation of a Department of Homeland Security that is solely focused, with a very laser-like focus, on the prevention and protection from terrorist attacks in this country. Since its inception on January 24, 2003, the Department of Homeland Security has made significant strides in protecting the country from terrorist attacks.
