“seniors are living longer because of innovative new treatments that extend and improve their quality of life. Unfortunately, many of these new treatments carry a cost that puts a huge burden on the shoulders of seniors who are living on fixed incomes. Today will ensure that low-income seniors no longer need to have to decide between purchasing drugs and buying food or paying for rent. This bill of ours will provide all seniors access to affordable prescription drug coverage that will limit their out-of-pocket payments. In addition, for low-income seniors, the bill will provide drug coverage that is free of premiums, deductibles and copayments. Regardless of income, seniors will be able to have peace of mind that they will have access to a voluntary drug benefit plan. More importantly, Mr. Speaker, we offer seniors a choice of selecting a drug plan that meets their individual needs. We leave the decisions in the hands of seniors, not in the hands of government bureaucrats. In this way, we can make sure that those who offer drug plans are accountable to seniors who can choose to vote with their feet. Mr. Speaker, I urge passage of our bill.”
