Madam President, in a few moments I will yield the floor to my colleagues who will have an announcement about the progress which has been made on the veterans bill, an important issue. I wish to take this moment to talk about a tale of two bills--a tale of two very critical issues that confront our country, both deserving of the time and attention of the Senate but how they have been treated very differently from one another. The first issue is one which has been talked about here; that is, the issue of student loans in America. This is an issue I care about deeply for two reasons. The first is, when I arrived on the floor of the Senate in January of 2011, I owed over $100,000 in student loans. For years we struggled with the cost of those loans. My parents never made enough money to save for our education, but I was able to pay for it through a combination of Pell grants and loans for my undergraduate and graduate studies. The undergraduate-level loans were manageable. The graduate- level loans for law school were quite a strain. At one point in our lives it was the single highest expenditure in our monthly budget.
