“Not just half price, but, no, we insist we will pay our price for it whether it is coming from the Dominican Republic or what have you. This is a bad jobs issue, too. The sugar program is killing jobs in the United States. Let me give a couple of illustrations. First of all, we have sugar refineries that are going out of business. We have closed 40 percent of the sugar refinery production in the United States since this sugar program came into existence in 1981, 40 percent. These are good-paying jobs. I had a press conference last week, and I had these members of the AFL-CIO surrounding me coming down from New York City and Baltimore saying, ``Hey, we are going to lose our jobs, this is my career, and we are going to have to shut down because there is not enough sugar in the United States to keep these mills open.'' But the other issue why we are losing jobs is, because of the high price of sugar, we are driving jobs outside the United States. Canada. Canada, you can buy sugar for about half the price that we do here. Why would a candy company that uses a lot of sugar continue producing in the United States when they could shift the production to Canada, produce the candy there and send it back to the United States? And that is exactly what is happening.”
