Well, this horrible al-Shabaab attack, coupled with the closure of over 20 U.S. Embassies and consulates this past summer and last month's targeted suicide bombings against Christians in Pakistan by an al-Qaeda-linked group, proves that terrorist groups are extremely active still and their influence is far-reaching.
