But then suppose that friend said, all right, I understand that you disapprove of drugs, but suppose you give me $100 a month to help pay my rent. I promise not to use your $100 for the drugs. I will apply your $100 toward my rent, and that will free up my $100 to buy drugs. We would still have to refuse, of course, because we would know that by giving the $100 we would be enabling and empowering the friend to buy drugs.”
