Emma Lazarus was by far at the time the leading Jewish literary figure in 19th-century America. And it's her sonnet which was called ``The New Colossus'' that is engraved on the base of the Statute of Liberty: ``Give me your tired, your poor, yearning to breathe free.'' And then the rest is history.
