“during my campaign for the U.S. Congress last year I met a man who lived in my district. His name was Dave Exley, and he was a painter, and I got talking to Dave. I was interested in talking to him. I had an uncle, Joe Ditta, who raised a family of seven as a painter. I got to talking to him about his business and what it was like, and he got out something and gave it to me that I will never forget. It was a paint stirrer, and he told me that he had been using that same stirring stick to stir the paint for 5 years. Each time he would use it, he would wipe it carefully off, and he said he was saving himself about 5 cents a day by using that paint stirring stick over and over and over again, and he showed it to me, and he said something to me that I will never forget. He said, every time you think about spending money or raising taxes, I want you to remember me because I am trying to feed my wife and my two sons, and I have trouble making ends meet. At the end of the month I have trouble making sure I have got enough money to pay the mortgage and to pay the electric bill. That is a lot of what this debate is about.…”
