On the recordMarch 28, 1996
In acknowledgement of this responsibility, Congress has provided $200,000,000 and possibly as much as $300,000,000 to expedite Everglades restoration activities, which will include acquisition of the highest priority lands needed to improve water storage and water quality critical to the restoration effort. This unprecedented commitment of $200,000,000 will be provided to the Secretary of Interior to either carry out the restoration activities or to provide funding to the State of Florida or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to carry out restoration activities. Congress does not intend for these funds to supplant any previous funds committed to any agency of the Federal Government or the State of Florida for the purpose of Everglades restoration, including the commitment to fund STA 1E, a component of the Everglades Restoration Project.
