I should point out that the Turkish studies proposal at the University of California at Berkeley has an element in it that goes even beyond the undermining of academic freedom. That would have been the case if UCLA had accepted the offer, which I am so proud that they chose not to accept. The University of California at Berkeley, has proposed to establish an advisory committee which would control how the funds will be spent, the selection of visiting faculty and the establishment of an endowed chair. That advisory committee will have on it an official of the Turkish Government. This is an odd provision to have in a committee given authority over what is taught and how it is taught and who teaches at a great American university.
