Mr. Shaw, I am interested in the position your party took when President Clinton sought to expand the tax credit for working families. As we know, there are many more working poor people than there are welfare poor. Only a third of single mothers even get welfare. These are the most vulnerable people for going on welfare however. Why is it, therefore, that the Republicans did not support the expansion of the family tax credit when that would be an important way to prevent people from having to go on welfare in the first place?
