“I support the underlying bill. I support the trade promotion authority, so-called fast track. I believe one of the great lessons we learned in the 1990s, under President Clinton, was that trade is a pillar of economic growth in our country. We only have so many people in our country. There is only so big a market. We have to open up markets around the world to create more jobs at home. We have to find other places around the world to sell our products. We have obligations, and that generally creates not only economic growth, more jobs, more wealth but improves our country generally. So I support the underlying bill. This amendment I have offered deletes words in the pending bill which I believe are very unfair and discriminate against the provisions of the bill that call for some concern and consideration of labor standards and environmental objectives in the agreements.”
