“I thank him for offering this amendment, which concerns the Ethics in Government Act... I intend to support the Senator's amendment. As has been said, and I will repeat it, the amendment will increase the civil penalties that already exist under the act and will create a new penalty for knowing and willful falsification or failure to report, and that is a criminal penalty. I note for my colleagues' benefit that the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee intends to take up reauthorization of the Office of Government Ethics this year.”
