Mr. Speaker, I thank the gentleman from Colorado, our esteemed leader, for his contribution. I would point out as well that the repeal of WEP and GPO, which directly impacts police officers and firefighters, is contained within our proposal. It needs a vote. Social Security has no impact on the debt or deficit and, as President Biden has proposed, is fully paid for by--most Americans don't even realize this--lifting the cap on people making over $400,000. Doing so allows us to enhance the program for the first time in 20-plus years and also makes sure that we extend the solvency of the program. Someone who knows that extraordinarily well is the gentleman from New Jersey, who also serves on the Social Security Subcommittee. Mr. Speaker, I yield to the gentleman from New Jersey (Mr. Pascrell).

Mr. Speaker, I yield myself such time as I may consume. I also extend my congratulations to Mr. Ferguson, and I thank Mr. Smith for his comments on this very important piece of legislation. I think the public is always glad to see…
we have to do it in a way that recognizes the original intent of Social Security, an insurance program to give Americans, after a lifetime of service and contribution to their communities and their Nation, a dignified and secure retirement.
Mr. Speaker, due to personal circumstances, I regrettably missed votes today. Had I been present, I would have voted Yea on Roll Call No. 436, the Motion to Recommit H.R. 5717, Nay on Roll Call No. 437, Final Passage of H.R. 5717, Nay on…
I think if we could balance that out to make it a little bit fairer for everybody, we would find some revenue to extend the livelihood of the Social Security trust fund.
