I believe when you tell the American people the truth, they will have you do the right thing, and I feel very strongly that what this new Republican majority tried to do last year and what we are trying to do this year will make our children better off than we, this generation, find ourselves, and that if we fail, I think they will be worse off. I believe that with all my heart and soul. I believe that what we tried to do last year was to get our financial house in order and balance the Federal budget. I believe we tried to save our trust funds from bankruptcy, particularly Medicare, and I believe we tried and are still trying to transform our caretaking society into a caring society, our caretaking social and corporate and agricultural welfare state into a caring opportunity society, and in the process we are trying to bring power, money and influence out of this city back to local communities, back to our local communities, back in some cases to our State governments, but closer to home.
