I represent the most affluent State in America, something of which I am proud. I also tell you I am not so proud of the fact that the largest increase in child poverty in the country occurred in my State over the last several years--a 60-percent increase in child poverty. So here is a small State, Connecticut, with 3.5 million people, enjoying unprecedented prosperity. Yet in the midst of this small State, we are also finding an unprecedented hardship on the part of a lot of people, particularly young people. One out of every five children in my State is growing up in poverty.
