I thank my good friend for bringing this issue to the attention of the Senate. This research area is important to the Navy and the defense of the United States. Technology being developed to support this capability is currently planned to be ready for transition to Navy aircraft in the fiscal year 2006 time frame, but can be completed sooner with additional funding in fiscal year 2003. The House of Representatives included an additional $9 million for this purpose in its version of the Defense authorization bill.
