Mr. President, I am very proud to be here today speaking in support of historic legislation that will move us one step closer to the day when who you love has absolutely nothing to do with the rights that you are afforded as a citizen of the greatest country in the world. Frankly, the passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act is embarrassingly long overdue. In my State of Connecticut we have had antidiscrimination laws on the books for over 20 years. In 1991, Connecticut became the fourth State to formally protect LGBT workplace rights, and in 2011 we became the 15th State to offer similar protections to our transgender citizens. So it is funny, because my constituents assume that all across this country it is already illegal to fire somebody for whom they love and for who they are. But, of course, as we know, that is just not the case across most of the country. Right now, in some States, you can be fired from your job simply because of having a little photograph of your partner on your desk at work.…
