On the recordJune 15, 2016
These are measures that can save lives. Facts have changed. We have seen over and over again the carnage that comes by allowing these loopholes to persist. Yes, we have had debates on this floor, but we have had debates and taken votes on this floor before. But our hope is that our colleagues' eyes have been opened to the epidemic that persists in the absence of legislative action. Our job is not to send condolences; our job is to debate legislation. My hope, through the Chair to Senator Durbin, is that there are discussions happening right now on ways to bring the two parties together around moving these two issues forward. Our job is to debate and to vote, to go on the record, to show our constituents where we stand on these issues, and to find ways to achieve common ground. Our hope is that by holding up consideration of the CJS bill, we will prompt both sides to come together and find a path forward on these issues.
