I rise in support of the balanced budget amendment. Just this week the national debt exceeded $15 trillion. That's the bottom line: $15 trillion, and a balanced budget amendment would hold government accountable. Now, some say that that accountability will tie the hands of Congress in yet one more way. Some say that this is going to create a greater debate between revenues and spending cuts. Well, I'd agree on both. The same way that every American family has to balance their budget every week, every month, every year, the same way that I, as a small business owner, have to pay my bills every week, every month, every year, we owe this country the opportunity to not only see a balanced budget, but a bipartisan effort here in Congress. If you want more job creation, we have to have certainty. Before a company is going to go out there and hire new employees, they need certainty, not only to see that our country is on the right path, not only to see that we're actually going to reduce our debt, but also taking a look at our credit rating to make sure that we actually are creditworthy and have a long-term plan. That type of certainty will create jobs in this country. That type of certainty is what's needed with a balanced budget amendment.
