H.R. 4268 would take our first steps to improve veterans' education benefits as recommended in the commission report. It would increase the Montgomery GI Bill from $536 to $600 per month on October 1, 2000, and to $720 a month on October 1, 2002. Educational assistance benefits for survivors and dependents would be raised at the same amount. H.R. 4268 would also furnish individuals still on active duty the option to convert to Montgomery GI Bill eligibility if they were eligible for the post-Vietnam era Veterans' Educational Assistance Program. More needs to be done on this to bring the Montgomery GI Bill benefits in line with the rising cost of education, but this bill is a good start.
