first, I agree with the comments of the Senator from Alabama that we ought to be promoting nuclear power. I am a strong advocate of that. I compliment the chairman of committee, Senator Domenici, for being very strong in his support for nuclear energy and for being totally consistent in the positions he has taken. I want to argue against hypocrisy. An environmental group handed me a sheet of paper a while ago. They are very much against subsidies. As it turns out, a subsidy for nuclear energy would be very bad. They are right about arguing against subsidies. That is why I am going to support this amendment. But all of the environmental arguments I have seen have been for subsidies when it comes to ethanol, solar power, biomass, wind energy, and you name it. The point here is that we ought to be consistent. If you think subsidies are a wonderful idea for these other things, then maybe you ought to support the loan guarantee for this additional method of producing power. But if you think subsidies are wrong, then you shouldn't support them for anything. As the chairman of the committee knows, I opposed all of these subsidies in the Finance Committee. I will offer amendments again to try to strip them out of the finance part of the bill when it is added to the Energy bill on the floor. I wish to make the point that if you want to be hypocritical--I am talking about these organizations and not Members of the Senate--then fine.…
