I share that sadness tonight because I think a very fine man has been ill treated. Some of my colleagues have said the process was fair. And I don't argue that the process was unfair. But what I argue was unfair was the characterization of the man. It was done so that there would be a reason to vote against him. As I will point out in a moment, I think the real reason there were objections to Judge Pickering was that he was a conservative from Mississippi nominated by President Bush.
