Major General Robinson, the Air Force has reported a shortage of approximately 2,000 pilots, including a shortage of 950 fighter pilots, essentially unchanged since last year.
The Fiscal Year 2016 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) required the Air Force to maintain a minimum of 1,900 fighter aircraft, of which at least 1,100 would be combat coded.
The Air Force appears to be on the cusp of procuring a fleet of light attack aircraft to conduct operations against violent extremist organizations in a more fiscally sustainable way and to free up fighter aircraft to focus on training for the high-end fight.
