we are here this evening on a very serious matter. It can literally mean life or death for many of our elderly citizens. Our great Nation was founded, and has so far been successful, based on the self-evident truth in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal. They are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, and that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Mr. Speaker, these founding truths were followed by a firm commitment from our Founding Fathers, the last sentence in the Declaration of Independence. It says: In support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor. Mr. Speaker, I think that those men would be heartbroken to see what happens here this evening. As I said earlier, the Republicans are in charge. We recognize that. You can do what you want to do. You do, and I give you credit, for publicly acknowledging that you want to destroy Medicare.
