The events of September 11 had a disastrous effect on Lower Manhattan's mass transit infrastructure. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority serves roughly one third of the entire Nation's commuters. Twelve of its subway stations below Chambers Street were incapacitated as a direct result of the attack, and the current, damaged state of the MTA's systems affects many of its 360,000 riders each day.
