On the recordFebruary 3, 2005
I agree that Judge Gonzales's life story embodies the American dream. Judge Gonzales is the son of immigrants, and lived in a home with his parents and eight brothers and sisters that I am sure had a lot of love but that did not have a lot of comfort, with no running water and no telephone. Thanks to his hard work and dedication, he went on to graduate from Rice University and Harvard Law School; he served as the Texas Secretary of State and a Justice on the Texas Supreme Court; and of course he became White House counsel in 2000. This is an extremely impressive record of personal accomplishment, and I admire Judge Gonzales for his life story, which proves that hard work can take you anywhere in this country, no matter where you start out on the economic ladder. It is inspiring not only for Hispanic Americans, but for all Americans.
